Dear Tipsters,

Each year, Maclean's magazine does this in Canada. It has generated controversy
in the university community, to the extent that some institutions now refuse to
send in data.

Apart from the sad fact that we now seem to be ranking universities like
automobiles in Consumer Reports, there is also a lack of complete transparency,
at least from Maclean's. A few years ago, I worked with a student to
reconstruct the rankings from the data provided in the magazine on each of the
criteria. We wanted to see what would happen to our institution if numbers
changed on certain criteria. In a couple of cases, raw data were not given -
only rankings on these criteria. The magazine refused to share the raw data
with us, which was puzzling in view of the fact that such data were published
for the other criteria.

Consequently, we were only partially successful in reconstructing the rankings.

Sincerely,

Stuart
