Yes, the story does have that feel.  I have always been 
fascinated by early-in-the-process scientific equipment where you 
can see people employing creative good-enough solutions to 
problems. For example, the "return" on my early cumulative 
recorder is really fishing line and a lead weight.  I laughed 
very hard when I saw that item and feel comfortable in concluding 
that Ralph Gerbrand was a fisherman.
