I'm having second thoughts about the validity of this claim, as
it's unclear what the status of the 2900 or so "full authors" listed
in footnote 2 are, in relation to footnote 1, which just adds six as
"additional author credits" to the original 2001 article at
http://tinyurl.com/yb9rxkq

I (very roughly) estimate that article, with true first author the
eminent Eric Lander (as opposed to Adekoy I cited above,
whose placement is alphabetic), to have only about 300 authors.

But it turns out we've been down this road before, notably in a
post from me in November- December of 2008, challenging the
list to find the paper with the longest list of authors. Sue Frantz
successfully found the one I had in mind. It's this one:

http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/hep-ex/pdf/0509/0509008v3.pdf

Precision Electroweak Measurements
on the Z Resonance. Accepted for publication in Physics
Reports, September 7, 2005. It is claimed to have 2512 authors
(see pages 227 to 245 of the pdf).

I'm gonna assume it really made it into print. Sticklers may
check this point.
