Allen,Claudia et all,
I agree with the comments made by Allen. The U.S should not be viewed as the only representative of Western society.I would say that one characteristic of Western society is the allowance of free flow of discussions without punitive consequences. There are extremist views in all religions. However some views may be construed as more detrimental to society. On the other hand some views like the self-immolation of Budhist monks in Ho Chi Ming city could be viewed as achieving self-liberation.Usually all those extreme behavior seem to have a common underpinning that it is done in the name of God,Allah. I have come up with the idea of the FUNDAMENTAL MINORITY ERROR.Extremists do not represent the majority thinking but yet we are likely to put them on a pedestal. This tendency to exaggerate the minority without the statistical consensus of the feelings of the majority is what I term the FME
