I agree with the comments made by Allen.The U.S should not be viewed as
the only representative of Western society.I would say that one
characteristic of Western society is the allowance of free flow of
discussions without punitive consequences.There are extremist views in all
religions.However some views may be construed as more detrimental to
society.On the other hand some views like the self-immolation of Budhist
monks in Ho Chi Ming city could be viewed as achieving
self-liberation.Usually all those extreme behavior seem to have a common
underpinning that it is done in the name of God,Allah.
I have come up with the idea of the FUNDAMENTAL MINORITY ERROR.Extremists
do not represent the majority thinking but yet we are likely to put them on
a pedestal.This tendency to exaggerate the minority without the statistical
consensus of the feelings of the majority is what I term the FME
