Bob just keeps rising higher and higher (rimshot!).

Among the most dangerous schools are Harvard, MIT, and other
Cambridge area schools. It is possible that Cambridge is a hotbed
of crime and vice or the campus crime reporting procedures have been
developed to a high level (there are other possibilities). Some of
the other most dangerous schools are in places that I am familiar with
and I am not too surprised that they are on the list. For example,
in the early 1990s I did some consulting work for the Board of Education
in Newark NJ which was located in the business district of Newark.
During lunch time I'd walk over to the Rutgers-Newark campus and
the NJ Institute of Technology which were only a few blocks away.
Newark has had and continues to have a high crime rate and one has
to be streetwise to know where it is safe to go and where it is not.
I assume that it may take students attending Rutgers-Newark and NJIT
some time to figure out how to take care of themselves as well as
safeguard their property. Similarly, several Philadelphia area schools
(U of Penn, Temple, etc) are listed on the most dangerous list. Having
spent some time in Philly, I can appreciate that the neighborhoods that
these schools are located in require some street smarts. I have been
to the University of Chicago only once for a workshop but I was aware
that it was surrounded by what might be considered a dangerous
neighborhood, so it is not surprising to me that it and several Chicago
universities are on the dangerous list. In these situations I think that
the local context (i.e., neighborhood) has to be taken into account as
well as how good the crime detection and reporting systems are by
the universities.

Then again, I have always felt that Harvard may have been a dangerous
place. ;-)
