Personally,I do not see anything wrong with the behavior of the ex-Dean of
Asian students at St,John's who was accused of using her scholarship awarded
students to perform chores for her at her house.
As the cross-cultural dude on Tips, this is not an unusual connecton
between international faculty and students.Since she was Asian and the
scholarship awarded students were Asians,we could assume that a bond existed
within the framewok of that collectivist culture and asking subordinates to
perform tasks and help her with certain duties could be perceived as
normal.Given the respect that folks in collectivist cultures have for their
seniors, saying "no" is not an option.
Btw,I have known department chairs who do not drive and have ask students to
perform chores for them.Do you assume that the prof
will flunk the students and hence jeordizing his or her ride?
