Reminiscent of the famous doll study done by Kenneth Clark (born and raised in
Panama),a father who adopted an Ethiopian orphan girl was disturbed by the
observation that his daughter often expressed and fantasized about long blonde
hair.In order to boost his daughter's self esteem and image about the beauty of
black hair,he was instrumental in having Sesams Street air programs featuring a
black character singing joyfully about the beauty of the African heritage hair.
Thanks to the media it is now possible to present positive images of
African physical
and other characteristics.I hope to take the doll study to African enclaves in
Peru and Bolivia and see if the the Afro-Peruvian and Afro-Bolivian
children hold similar attitudes toward blonde hair.
Please note that since this is Hispanic Heritage Month,I am devoting some of
my posts to Latin America. Affiliated tipsters are invited to post.
