Tipsters,

Over the summer I mentioned I was working on an iphone/ipod/ipad app designed
to bring the latest news in psychology to these devices. I'm happy to say that
as of today the app is available in the iTunes app store. I hope you all don't
mind if I say a few words about the app - an app which is all about psychology.

The app is called PsycExplorer. It consists of 4 sections - News, Video, Audio
and Twitter. I break down all the news and video into the major subfields of
psychology: Bio & Neuroscience, Cognition, Developmental, Disorders, Gender &
Sexuality, Motivation & Emotion, Personality, Social & Applied and Therapy. I
also have a section on Critical Thinking which includes items from research,
statistics and the scientific method.

I personally select all the news, videos and audio that appears in the app. I
draw from a large list of psychology blogs as well as traditional news sources
(NYT, CNN, etc) to find what I believe are the most interesting news stories,
research summaries, video and audio clips, etc., and then I place the items in
the appropriate subfield. The video clips (about 10 per section, so over 40
clips) are some of the best video I can find on the web (typically from
Youtube) and include clips demonstrating Asch's conformity study, Milgram's
study, Zimbardo's prison study, the visual cliff studies, etc. The videos are
constantly being updated and users can email themselves the links to any of the
clips in order to build up their own video libraries.

What is especially neat is that the app is built to allow me to update the
content at any time with new items, new videos, new audio, etc. In addition,
the Twitter section contains real-time tweets from a group of psychologists
who, over the years, I have found consistently tweet about interesting news in
our field with links to the original articles.

I want to thank the large group of reviewers, many of them contributors to
TIPS, who provided feedback on the app during its development. I hope to be
able to offer the app on Android and Windows-based phones in the future, but
for now it operates on Apple devices only. I personally think it's a very cool
app and I hope you'll take a moment to check it out and that you find it worthy
of recommending to your colleagues and students. Here's the link to the iTunes
homepage for PsycExplorer:
