I don't have an answer for you, Gary, but I suspect that a lot of the 
variability we see in incoming students reflects a lot of variability at the 
high-school level, and induces a lot of variability in the "college-level" 
work.  Sometimes I'm teaching high-school (or even grade-school) writing, and 
other times I'm helping polish a very good paper -- from students in the same 
first-year core class.
