I would tell them that some nits need to be picked. After all, who wants lice?

The nitpicking was directed at both citations and sources. For example, it was
nitpicking to mark Froman (2010) when the source was Froman et al. (2010). and
then a similar complaint regarding the reference.

I like this idea. Possibly one way to do it is to give them a number of
references to find. In each case, falsify one piece of information (Journal
title, volume number, page number, etc.) to show them the importance of getting
it right and possibly the relative importance of certain items (e.g., if you
get the DOI right, if it has one, at least the reference could be found
although other mistakes in the sources could be annoying).

Did they think the nitpicking was the specific elements of the reference (page
numbers, etc.) or things like what parts of the reference you italicize in APA
style?

I collected some information about students' view about the process of doing
their research and preparing a report and talk. One reoccuring theme is that
students regard correctly citing and correctly referencing sources as a
nuisance. They agree it is important to give credit, but the details are just
nitpicking (so they say). Has anyone devised an assignment in which you ask
students to find sources when provided as less than perfect information? I am
sure students would complain, but would they make the connection to why they,
in turn, need to provide correct details in their own papers?

i welcome any comments or suggestions, blaine
