There are several articles in the news media that are reporting that today is the "Saddest Day of the Year" according to the formula worked out by "Psychologist" Cliff Arnell. So, first, here's an article on the IrishTimes.com website which, I think, provides more relevant info than other sources; see: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/features/2011/0117/1224287664464.html
Second from the UK's Indepedent website, an article that has less detail but might be more amusing to read: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/blue-monday-the-most-depressing-day-of-the-year-433235.html Third, for those that are curious about the equation used to calculate the saddest day, here is an article from the Washington Times website. A bonus is the mention that there is a formula for the "Happiest Day" (though not provided) -- mark down on your calendars Friday, June 23, 2011; see: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2006/jan/9/20060109-115631-4762r/?page=1 Fourth, an article on the Time mag website takes a somewhat more skeptical view of the matter (and strikes another blow for American Exceptionalism!); see: http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1704887,00.html But, as we all know, the saddest day of the year is very much an individual matter and will vary wildly from individual to individual depending upon the course of events, circumstance, and chance (e.g., being in the wrong place at the wrong time). And even if it is the saddest day for someone, it important to remember that there are good things in the world that, if they do not make up happy, remind us why life is a wortwhile struggle. And remember birthdays: Today the U.S. celebrates the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr and here are some quotes from MLK to remind us of his greatness and what we have lost: http://www.csmonitor.com/layout/set/print/content/view/print/356886 Finally, every day is somebody's birthday. If you feel the need, celebrate it even if you don't know whose birthday it is (though NY Time's "On this Day" will give you a list of people if you need justification). -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
