From: "Penley, Julie" <[email protected]> Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2011 09:35:28 -0700 X-Message-Number: 3 Hi Patrick, Honestly, I think the candidates should do their homework about your dept. and shouldn't be expecting you to provide (all of the) information. Perhaps be prepared to answer questions that aren't readily available on your dept's or institution's websites. For example, questions about start-up funding for a lab (if yours is a research-oriented department), whether there might be a lighter teaching load the first semester (or even the first year) to allow a research program to get off the ground, and opportunities to develop new courses or to teach courses that weren't specified in the job ad. Maybe also a question about where you see your department going in the next 5 years or so. What an interesting thread. I'm curious about what others will offer! Julie Julie A. From: [email protected] Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2011 17:48:43 +0000 (UTC) X-Message-Number: 6 In addition to Julie's excellent suggestions, I would inquiry about the following: The character of faculty-faculty relations within the department (e.g., to what extent do people get along?) and about faculty-administration relations within the institution (e.g., to what extent is it adversarial). I would also be very interested in the chair's interpretation of the official criteria for promotion and tenure. I realize that the latter information is probably readily available, but I would still be very interested in the chair's interpretation of what it takes to get tenure (e.g., many departments emphasize the importance of 'good teaching', but when it comes time to getting tenure it is the publication record that really counts- and rightly so IMO). Recent grade distributions for various courses would be helpful as would sample outlines (i.e., syllabi) from various courses. Also, the ratio of tenure to nontenure faculty in the department would be useful as well as the % of faculty who were denied tenure in previous years. That's all that comes to mind for now.
