Given that February is celebrated as African-American month in the U.S.,
it is worth noting that on February 25, 1870, the first African-American was
sworn in as a U.S. Senator.  Because no African-American had yet been
elected to the House of Representatives, this person is the first 
African-American
to serve in Congress.  So, does anyone know the gentleman's name?

For more detailed information on the gentleman, there is a Wikipedia
entry for him (yadda-yadda) and it is worth noting that after his service
in the Senate, he became president of the Alcom Agricultural and Mechanical
College (now Alcom State University) where he also taught philosophy.
Later, he would teach theology at Shaw College (now Rust College).
