Given that February is celebrated as African-American month in the U.S., it is worth noting that on February 25, 1870, the first African-American was sworn in as a U.S. Senator. Because no African-American had yet been elected to the House of Representatives, this person is the first African-American to serve in Congress. So, does anyone know the gentleman's name?
The NY Times notes that it reported on this event back in 1870 and here is a link to that news report: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/big/0225.html#article For more detailed information on the gentleman, there is a Wikipedia entry for him (yadda-yadda) and it is worth noting that after his service in the Senate, he became president of the Alcom Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Alcom State University) where he also taught philosophy. Later, he would teach theology at Shaw College (now Rust College).
