One of the reasons I posted the link about the third arm is because it
relates to the idea of pain perception. The conversation is beginning to
turn toward the idea of phantom pain as well as psychosociocultural
differences in pain perception and tolerance. The third arm article
demonstrates how we can trick our brain into perceiving that we are being
touched. So much so that some participants actually flinched when a sharp
blade was brought toward the prosthetic third arm. One of my coworkers told
me about a guy who had every inch of his penis tatooed like a snake (sorry
if you're squeamish) and I thought it was the pinnacle of examples of
differences in motivation, tolerance, personality factors, cultural factors,
and whatever else influences one's ability to endure pain.
