Reluctant to enter in here, but randomized controlled trials of schizophrenia
do not compare people with schizophrenia with normals, so Michael S's comment
is not relevant. They randomly assign patients with schizophrenia to
alternative treatment (or no treatment) conditions.
In addition to oodles of medication studies and oodles of meta-analyses on
medication studies (glutamate blockers are the big new direction here), there
is a fairly large literature on the use of family therapy to treat
schizophrenia - pioneered by the late Jerry Hogarty and his colleagues at
Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinics in Pittsburgh. This family-focused
treatment includes psychoeducational components and is designed to decrease
levels of familial "expressed emotion" (arguably a misnomer), which comprises
familial hostility, criticism, and overinvolvement toward the patient with
schizophrenia. E.g., see:
http://archpsyc.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/43/7/633
Last time I looked at this literaure, most studies suggested that this
treatment can help to delay relapse, although not prevent it.
There are also promising data on cogniitve enhancement therapy on some
target symptoms among patients with schizophrenia:

All the best (and sorry that I don't have time to send more)...Scott

Not sure what Steven is looking for.Ironically, his "moments like this" is not
being too fruitful for him.
Anyway comparing schizophrenics with so -called normals can raise questions of
control group equilance.
Let us assume that the schizophrenic group is labelled "Charlie Sheen",what
would the comparative control group look like?
It is my understanding that true internal experimentasl validity calls for the
experimental and control groups to be equal, except
for the manipulation of the indepedent variable. Go figure.
My bestt strategy would be to run subjects "as their own controls".
Hope this helps.
