Mythbusters did a show on this, but I'm pretty sure that it hadn't been the 
subject of laboratory study before this one. On Mythbusters they found support 
for swearing. Of course, their methodologies are filled with potential for 
experimenter and participant bias (they can be great examples of those 
problems). 

In terms of making an IRB happy, I had thought that the classic cold presser 
test was not considered a problem, generally.

I haven't read the research in detail yet, but I understand that a study
has come out which shows that if you swear when you hurt yourself (like
stubbing your toe I would guess, which I assume we all do...) the swearing
helps to reduce your sensation of pain.  This is true, however, only if
you don't usually swear in your daily life.

Sounds like it could provide for a good example of a factorial design
since it's one of those "Q: Does swearing help?  A: Well, it depends...."
