The Scientific American blogger John Matson takes a look at the
calculations made by Harold Camping (originator of the May 21, 2011
end of the world prophecy -- an engineer by training) and, believe it or
not, identifies the mathematical basis for the date of the Rapture. See:

I find it interesting that Camping & Co "guarantee" that the time is
correct.  I don't know what such a guarantee is worth but advocates 
of the "confidence interval" approach to statistical analysis are probably
worried (i.e., what do you do if your CI = 0.00).   ;-)
