No, this isn't when rats from all over the country get together
in one place to reminisce about the past, get drunk like in the
past, and try to hook-up with the sexiest female (though some
might think this is happening in certain parts of NYC). Instead,
rat lovers (people with affection for rats -- just being specific)
will be holding a "convention" in NYC tomorrow (Sunday,
May 29, 2011). The NY Daily News has a story about it in
today's edition; see:

Here's a picture of one of the cute critters:

I presume that most older Tipsters will have "fond" memories of RatLab,
where they used rats to illustrate operant conditioning procedures.
Though some students were afraid of the rats, the fears reduced over
the course of the semester. And there were always students who wanted
to keep their rats as pets. When I was in grad school at SUNY-Stony Brook,
the RatLab eventually developed a Rat Olympics where rats competed
on different tasks (e.g., races in mazes, climbing ropes, jumping, etc.).
I guess I now know what happened to those students who spent so much
time with their rats. ;-)

For people in NYC who are interested in attending the "Rat Convention",
there's a Meet-Up page that provides information; see:
