Remember all that hoopla more than a decade ago about how
children watching violence on TV will re-enact violent episodes
on the playground and other areas of their lives? As a matter a fact,
a famous image in most psychology intro text was of a child imposing havoc on
a bobo doll. The effects of observational learning fell under the Social
learning paradigm pioneered by Canadian Albert Bandura
and Mischel and others.
In a recent decision by the U.S Supreme Court, the majority ruled
that it is within the first amendment right for children to play and watch
violent video games and efforts to legislate against and impose
restrictions would violate constitutional guarantees. The court found no basis
to ban for fear that participants in viewing those games would themselves turn
out to be violent. It was mentioned that Grimm Fairy Tales contain violent
scenes but we do not ban the book.
Now,I see a difference between the earlier TV viewing and the current
video games. The latter is more participatory whereas the former is passive. One
can argue that this does not negate
the subsequent effects of observing violence but it does appear that current
video games allow a degree of instant participatory display of aggression that
staves off displacement to other future activities and social interactions.
