Ironically, the question needs to be asked how far psychiatry has
advanced. Clearly, these procedures depicted are brutal. And yet in my
class last night I had a student tell me that her mother, who has been
dealing with life-long depression, is now being prescribed 8 different
prescriptions. That can't be helpful. What's interesting is that she's
been in therapy for most of her life--as well as being
institutionalized--and just recently was recommended to go to a
cognitive therapist. Progress moves along, even at a snail's pace.
