I probably was more influenced by the ideas of Julian Huxley , Bertrand
Russell and Jean Paul Sartre (Being and Nothingness).Having been
conditioned by catholicism and spending some novitiate time at the Abbey of
Gethsemani (under the tutelage of Thomas Merton), I still consider myself
as neutral on the question of atheism. From a background of religious
contemplation of the saints like St.John of the Cross,St.Theresa of Avilla
and the desert fathers like St.Jerome I now embrace some type of scientific
and evolutionary humanism, but I do consider myself a rogue contemplative
naturalistic monk. As Thomas Merton wrote "My Lord God,I have no idea of
where I am going".
Btw,isn't there some Trappist enclave in New Hampshire?
