I tend to agree with the Governor on this. The fact that he is willing not
to take his daughter's major into consideration, shows his objectivty. The
governor is saying that academic disciplines should help create jobs for
the Florida economy. From my perspective a fictional Mickey Mouse has
created more jobs in Florida
than anthropology. As the cross-cultural dude on Tips,I am interested in
anthropology, but there is only so much I can take of learning about Seminole
indians burial grounds.Curious as to why his daughter is working towards an
MBA . Michael

An interesting (and odd) addendum this morning to the story that Jeff
posted:
Florida Governor Attacked Field His Daughter Studied
Many anthropologists remain furious at Governor Rick Scott, a Florida
Republican, for saying this week that his state doesn't need more graduates
in anthropology. Now the Associated Press reports that the governor's
daughter, Jordan Kandah, has an anthropology degree from the College of
William & Mary. Kandah's career path backs the view of anthropologists that
their discipline can be preparation for a variety of fields. She was
formerly a special education teacher and recently enrolled in an M.B.A.
program.

Hi all,
The article mentioned in the subject line is here:
http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/10/12/florida_governor_challenges_idea_of_non_stem_degrees
A couple of excerpts from the article:
--QUOTE--
Governor Rick Scott gave an interview Monday to The Herald-Tribune in which
he said that he wants to shift money away from some degree programs at state
universities to increase support for science and technology fields. To
illustrate what's wrong with current funding patterns, he said: "If I’m
going to take money from a citizen to put into education then I’m going to
take that money to create jobs. So I want that money to go to degrees where
people can get jobs in this state. Is it a vital interest of the state to
have more anthropologists? I don’t think so."....
The emergence of anthropology as a target was something of a surprise to
Florida academics. Last year, State Senator Don Gaetz, who has since been
elected as president of the Senate for 2012, complained about other degrees
in the social sciences. "When the No. 1 degree granted is psychology and the
No. 2 degree is political science, maybe before we ask $100 million more of
taxpayers we should re-deploy what we have," Gaetz said. "That way we make
sure we're not sending graduates out with degrees that don't mean much."
Those comments led a group of psychology professors to prepare a report
noting that just because the psychology major is popular doesn't mean it is
a bad degree. The paper noted success for graduates in a range of fields
(not just psychology).
