I was more concerned about the size of the effect -- if the velocity of the 
neutrino had been twice, or ten times that of C I would be more likely to view 
it as 'new physics', rather than something that may or may not be within the 
margin or error of the measurement, which is what the current controversy is 
about.

Decided to check out the creds of the author of the article you linked to;
came up with:

2001 - 2005 | Bates College | Lewiston, ME
• Graduated in 2005 with honors in Geology, secondary focus in English

So he's got some science chops (an undergraduate major).
