A couple of points:

(1) Unless a website or a source clearly says that images are
copyright free or in the public domain, it is best to assume that
the image is copyrighted even though it is unclear who holds
the copyright. Consider the Flickr account maintained by the
University of Akron's "Center for the History of Psychology"; see:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahap65/

Each of the images here have a copyright mark/all right reserved
indicated. Is it possible to find these images elsewhere without
such indications? Probably. If you or a student finds an image
on the web without any indication of copyright, it would probably
be best to get the help of a professional to determine if it is
copyright-free or has no restrictions on its use.

(2) Age of an image or publication is not a reliable guide to whether
it is in or out of copyright. If one goes to www.hathitrust.org, one
will find a large number of manuscripts and books from the 19th
century but, puzzlingly, still under copyright. For books that are
out of copyright, one could assume that figures and pictures in such
books are in the public domain and may be used however one wants
(unless it has been fixed in a form which re-establishes copyright).
This could be one source of images from old psychology texts.

(3) I believe that APA has put its journal articles in the public
domain if they were published before a specific date. I assume
this means that figures and pictures in these articles are also in
the public domain and can be freely used. But I would caution one
to get professional advice about whether such materials are truly
in the public domain and whether there are any restrictions on how
they can be used.
