Coca Cola attempt to change to a white can has been a marketing disaster. It
seems that the company should have consulted with some human factors behavioral
engineers.Although the drink was the same, people had different perceptions of
the white can coca cola.So the company is back to the original red. Why so much
public resistance? It could be that red is a very strong stimulus for
appetitive behavior. There is noted evidence that people tend to eat and drink
more when the victuals are placed on a red plate or a red container.
As a matter of fact I had a restaurant change from white plates to red plates
and sales doubled. Preliminary research shows that one strategy to get people
with eating disorders like anorexics) to eat is to serve them meals on red
plates and red cups.
In a work by JJ Gibson( I think it was titled The senses considered
as perceptual systems) some mention was made of colors and their impact.
Coca Cola should learn that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks.Go big red.
Just curious how do tipsters read the resistance of the public
to attempts to change by Coca Cola?
There may also be some phychophysical and jnd here-some people think that the
attemted marketing of the new white coke looked too much as diet can coke.
