For the last few days, I have been reading 180 free hand student evaluations, as well as the last of daily journals in which student after student after student has recorded her or his frenetic anxiety and stress and depression and fear, not to mention sleep deprivation. For the last few days, I have been struggling to reluctantly put together about 180 final grades knowing full well that they have little, if any, educational and life development meanings. It's that time of the semester when I get hit square between the eyes that our eyes are on the wrong prize. So much of what we professors do as teachers makes it so obstructive for students to truly care about true learning, to truly learn, and to acquire that lasting proverbial "love of learning." I see just how much we academics have created on our campuses what I call PLC, a Pathological Learning Climate in which thrive Pathological Learning Classrooms, instead of what I call TLC, a Therapeutic Learning Climate in which are nourished nurturing Therapeutic Learning Classrooms.
