A postscript to my comments on Frank Cioffi: I can't resist quoting a 
characteristic comment he made in a caustic review in the philosophy 
journal *Inquiry* of Richard Wollheim's *Freud* in the Fontana "Modern 
Masters" series (still in print). This was published in 1972 at a time 
when it was received opinion that Freud was a man of absolute 
integrity. After quoting a sentence of Freud's, Cioffi wrote:

"I won't say that this statement is a lie, since as we all know, a lie 
is an interested falsehood propagated by someone not Freud."
