Some people like to use news source aggregators to get a quick overview of what is happening across a broad range of topics and issues. While adjusting my settings on news.google.com I decided to create a new topic for news.google.com to find articles on. Well, I used the phrase "cognitive neuroscience" and it works. The news for this topic appears at the bottom of the webpage and if you click on the term, it take you a page with more entries for today's popular media coverage of things being reported in cognitive neuroscience; see:
http://news.google.com/news/section?pz=1&cf=all&q=cognitive+neuroscience Now, I presume some Tipsters have already figured this out and are currently using to track interests near and dear to their hearts (e.g., latest news on operant conditioning, bluegrass music, home beer making, popular internet memes [BTW, anyone watch last night's "South Park"?] and so on) so I apologize to these "first adopters" for bringing up possibly out of date information. One thing that I learned today from this news is that the Dutch Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) awards something called the Heineken Prizes. Now, at first, I thought "Hmmm, beer!" but it turns out that like the Nobel prizes, these prizes originate from the firearms trade. So, here is a mass media article on the 2012 Heneiken prize winners: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/15/idUS114402+15-Mar-2012+HUG20120315 Of some possible interest to Tipsters is the following 2012 recipient: |John Duncan, assistant director of the MRC Cognition and Brain |Sciences Unit in Cambridge (United Kingdom). Prof. Duncan is |receiving the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Cognitive Science for his |remarkable innovative, multidisciplinary research into the relationships |between psychology, behaviour and intelligence on the one hand |and neural processes on the other. His concepts have become |a cornerstone of cognitive neuroscience. For more on the origins of the Heineken prize see: http://www.knaw.nl/Pages/DEF/26/134.bGFuZz1FTkc.html For more on the body awarding the prize see: http://www.knaw.nl/smartsite.dws?id=25792&lang=ENG I wonder if they televise the award ceremony because I can think of a great drinking game involving beer while watching it. ;-) -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
