Educational activities of the kind you describe do not fall under the category
of human subjects research and, therefore, do not need IRB review.

Subject: [tips] is ethics review required for an interview assignment

Dear TIPS people:

In one of our courses we ask each student to interview an older person,
typically a friend or relative. The purpose is to relate life events of the
interviewee to various models of development. This is an assignment, students
write a paper, based in part on the interview. The assignment instructions
cover issues of confidentiality, anonymity, respect for privacy, etc.

Information never leaves the classroom, the intention is purely instructional.

Does this assignment and its parameters need to be reviewed  by an ethics
board?
