Well, since the massive numbers of "mentally ill" numbers that the industry likes to throw around for promotional purposes (typically 1 in 5, 1 in 4, even 1 in 3) are almost entirely premised on the idea that alcoholism and drug abuse are "mental illnesses," it may make more sense than it seems. I bet more than 80% of admissions are based on these conditions. (I have always despised the phrase "substance abuse" -- when's the last time someone got arrested for "abusing," say, "plaster of paris"?) Best, Chris --- Christopher D.
