I use Google Forms for short assignments. I just have the students enter their names and email addresses so I know who submitted what. I download the file as an Excel spreadsheet, enter my comments in a new column, and then do a mail merge to return the graded assignments to the students.
You can find the details in this blog post: http://suefrantz.com/2011/11/19/google-docs-use-forms-for-short-assignme nts/ I also used Forms to gather data from former students for a SOTL project I'm working on.
