There's an interesting piece of recent research on a topic called "Experience
Taking" - the idea that when we are immersed in the reading of a very good
story we can become deeply affected by the characters. The research is
summarized here:

One quote:

"When you share a group membership with a character from a story told in
first-person voice, you're much more likely to feel like you're experiencing
his or her life events," Libby said. "And when you undergo this
experience-taking, it can affect your behavior for days afterwards."

It reminded me of a 3 minute video that is quite popular now in which we see
the typical activities of a teen aged boy (college aged or so). We get to know
and identify with him in the first few minutes of the video because of his
typical life experiences. Then, at the very end, we see him propose to his
boyfriend.

Potential connections not only of course to what Obama said yesterday, but to
topics on sexual orientation and attitude change.
