There is an article in about this in the Journal of the History of the 
Behavioral Sciences from the period when I was the editor. It is by an Irish 
author... Kieran McMahon, perhaps? As I recall, it turns out that psychologists 
themselves (incl. G Stanley Hall) used the term "schizophrenia" for split 
personality early in the 20th century. The hard distinction that we insist on 
today is a later development.
