A fascinating long-term study of butterflies in the Fukushima area of Japan reveals some of the effects of the radiation released from the nuclear reactor there. The study was originally a long-term study of the effect of climate change on the butterflies but then the butterflies changed form as their genes mutated from the radiation.
There are various popular media accounts of this study and here is one: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19245818 The study was published in the journal "Scientific Reports" and an html version is available here: http://www.nature.com/srep/2012/120809/srep00570/full/srep00570.html And a PDF version is available here (which I think is the way to go). http://www.nature.com/srep/2012/120809/srep00570/pdf/srep00570.pdf NOTE: has some interesting data analysis results that might be useful in certain classes. -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
