Some new research focuses on how the brain manages to remove the byproducts of cell metabolism out of the brain as well as suggesting a new angle on thinking of how to approach Alzheimer's (i.e., whether the build-up of amyloid protein might be prevented or ameliorated). There are a couple of popular media articles on this. Here is Wired's version: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/08/brain-waste-cleaning/ And here is Scientific American's version: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=brain-cleaning-discovery
The original research was published in Science Translational Medicine and is available here: http://stm.sciencemag.org/content/4/147/147ra111 Now, it must be pointed out that the original research was done on mice and it will be a while before the techniques are developed to be done with humans but it does provide new insights into how the brain takes out the trash. -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
