I found the press articles most interesting and might use this in class this
fall--some of the articles took some very convoluted interpretations of the
correlation paths. So by the time I read the live science press release it
sounded like students may want to binge to increase their popularity--not so
much to increase their happiness! Wow. How did they get there? That's why I
think this is a great set of papers to use in class--on the other hand the
scienceblog report was pretty accurate in repeating the study findings.

Thanks!

Subject: Blitzed College Students Are Happier Than Non-Blitzed Students

NOTE: To ensure we're talking about the same thing, by "blitzed" I mean the
kind of drunkenness that occurs when one engages in binge drinking.

A paper to be presented today at the annual meeting of the American
Sociological Association (ASA) -- if you're in Denver, it's at 2:30pm MDT --
researchers have found that college students who engage in binge
drinking are happier than students who don't engage in binge drinking.

In keeping with the practices of other professional organization, such as our
APA, the ASA had "embargoed" the study until this morning when it made
available the press release available at this website:

Needless to say, the popular media was quick to pick up on this story and you
can see how they handle it here:
