Chris, The only reality shows I watch are news programs and wouldn't know much about the folks you mention or HBB unless (a) their latest antic is somehow newsworthy or (b) a commercial for their latest "enterprise". I would be blissfully ignorant of HBB if commercials for her show didn't suddenly appear on some of the channels I watch. Oh, to be blissfully ignorant once again! Then again, given that the great mass of the U.S. does watch these things and a number of them will show up in our classes, as instructors we do have a responsibility to have some familiarity with these things and being up to date. For example, in one class I mentioned the James Stewart movie "Harvey" with the imaginary 6 foot rabbit which is also playing on Broadway right now. None of the students knew what I was talking about. I had to follow up with "It's kinda like "Wilfred" but with a rabbit and the rabbit is better behaved". Then they seem to understand. So, one can try to ignore these cultural aberrations but at the risk of appearing out of touch and potentially irrelevant and "uncool" to our students. ;-) -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] P.S. The most I know about Snooki from "Jersey Shore" comes from the "South Park" episode that the had her in. Ditto for Paris Hilton. I await an episode on HBB. --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
