A list that I deal with is below. By the way, Eric Landrum did a great series
of videos on how to get Word to do your bidding. While a version of Word
behind, they are still very helpful for many students.
Setting Margins: http://bit.ly/rg4LYF
Page Headers: http://bit.ly/ooLKMh
Line Spacing: http://bit.ly/p2uAF0
Others (references!): http://bit.ly/ng5jIf

Word's defaults to have extra space between paragraphs so you don't have true
double spacing without fixing it. It is not obvious in any version of word how
to fix it (Format: Paragraph: Set space before and after paragraphs to 0 and
make sure it is set to not give extra space between paragraphs of the same
type).
Word's margins by default are 1.25" instead of 1". New version of word is
easier and a bit more obvious how to fix this.
Word by default does not allow widow and orphans lines on pages, so you don't
get remotely close to 1" margins at the bottom without fixing it.
Headings will not be properly centered if there is an indent set on that line.
Students often don't understand how incredibly valuable setting a page break
can be to make sure that certain sections are always on new pages. They often
put numerous line feeds into the document then have to adjust every time they
edit anything.
Student often confuse what Word calls a Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. with what
APA calls Heading Level 1, Heading Level 2, etc. thinking they are the same
thing.
Students often do not know how to set a 'right flush tab' so that they can set
the page number 1" from the right edge of the paper.

And, recounting this has me now suffering a fear sweat reaction by reminding me
I soon will be grading a bunch of Research Methods papers.

Thanks! <grin>

Hi Jim,
Definitely hanging indents. Also headers, especially when title page is
different, and page numbers. Paragraphs e.g. indent paragraph automatically.
Centering text mid-page. on title page.

Hi

What are some of the APA style requirements that students find difficult to
implement because they have not figured out how to do it properly in Word? I'm
thinking of things like hanging indents and aligning decimal values (e.g., in a
correlation matrix).

Take care
Jim
