Hi

Yes, we do pay higher taxes (in theory) than the USA, but that is because
(arguably) more of us are the kinds of citizens that Louis has long argued for
as teachers ... namely, we are concerned about the well-being of our fellow
citizens and are willing (sometimes reluctantly, I admit) to share our own
bounty with those less fortunate. More of us are also, perhaps, more concerned
about the well-being of our children, their children, and other people's
children and grandchildren, which will depend on the health of our future
environments, which leads to the taxes on CO2, roads, and trash.

The "in theory" part comes from two considerations. First, our taxes cover
much of the cost of health-care, which must be added on to the USA's level of
taxation. I gather that the total tax-burden in Canada and the USA is not that
different once the cost of health-care is included. Second, not doing
something about the environment, social inequities, and the like has both
short-term and long-term consequences and costs.

But don't worry Louis, I'm sure that if our conservative prime minister has his
way, we will become more like the USA in many respects (that is, if we are not
simply sold to China first ... or maybe that is the same thing?).

How is this relevant to psychology? Because there are psychological differences
between countries, states, and people that contribute to their political
beliefs and systems. The map of the recent USA election is striking in the
distribution of Red and Blue states, with a few exceptions. What are the
psychological factors that contribute to this very orderly distribution of
(proportions of) people? What role did race play in Romney's winning the white
male vote?

Take care
Jim

[All these things are also true in every European country, as well. Don't
forget that in most of Europe and Canada you will face taxes on: 1. A
value-added tax on all goods and services between 12.5% and 22.5% 2. A tax on
how much CO2 your vehicle will emit presuming 20,000kM/year 3. Many are
starting to implement taxation/tolls based on how many miles you drive per year
on certain roads 4. A tax on how much trash, based on weight, you produce
instead of buying and utilizing recycleable products 5. You must post
information concerning "Multi-cultural diversity" in any business you may open
or face fines So, welcome to Canada - here's the national anthem translated in
French.]

Make it a good day
