Sue may try to point out that Twitter is not exactly her forte, but I set
up a Twitter account just to see what "the kids" are doing, and so I
wouldn't look like the old fart that I probably am. (Though I protest that
my course in the Psychology of Love and Sex is exceedingly popular at
Plymouth State University. Gee, just MAYBE it's the topic?? No lab for
it so far.)
I selected Sue Frantz as a person on my brand new Tweet list...okay, that's
probably not what they call it, but I forget. Anyhow, I selected her.
So the first tweet I saw from Sue pointed out that our students today don't
know how to read a clock ("and does it matter?"). I went to my classroom
and saw: not one student wearing a watch! I thought, "Hmmm...Sue is on to
something." I asked my own kids - all in their 30's and 40's - who agreed
that no one wears a watch now. They use their phones, since it's *always *at
arm's reach. (Actually, our oldest daughter, who is 43, does wear a watch.
What does that tell you? [Besides how old I am?] The other four feigned
pretend ignorance about what a watch is.)
The thread about what has happened to TIPS has gotten me mulling over this
topic. I think I recognized myself as a person who occasionally posts a
new teaching idea on TIPS but often responds to someone's query if I could
help/offer any insight, presses DELETE with occasional regularity as soon
as I see a particular name come up, but continually enjoys joining in the
fray. (Except for the DELETE person[s] whom I vowed to ignore three years
ago and have done so, no matter how aggravated I have felt.) And some
TIPSters have always brought attention and delight, such as Stephen Black
and Allen Esterson (Allen posted as recently as September). There are many
experts on this list, and I love that they share their minds with us.
TIPS offers many different things. Many of my teaching methods have
resulted from interactions on TIPS over the last 20 years, from giving
makeup tests only on the same day as the final exam to helpful wording to
point out to a poor student that a letter of recommendation I'm asked to
write "might not help you." Well, the list would go on and on...
