The NY Times has an article that provide a little review of a soon to be
published book "Paying the Professorate" which provides the results from
an international study of the salaries of academics. see:

(1) Damn the Canadians! ;-)

(2) Would you like to be an academic in Ethiopia?

(3) Are you glad that you're not an academic in Russia?

(4) Why might Chinese academics find U.S. schools so attractive?

I have some questions about the accuracy of the data (it appears that
it is hard to get good data on academic's salaries) but it does give one
pause. One major problem is that the data is provided by country and
not academic discipline within country. Nonetheless, the top level salaries
for the U.S. seem a little low, unless law and medical schools are being
excluded.
