Dear TIPSters, Most of you are probably nearly done your grading now. But think what could have been! Instead of the mundane A, B, C, D, etc., you could have assigned essays and exams ranked quotations from the famed surrealist Irish playwright, Samuel Beckett (author of the stupendously funny and puzzling "Waiting for Godot," among many others).
Imagine giving the very best papers a grade of: "There is a little of everything, apparently, in nature, and freaks are common..." (it goes on.) And the very worst papers could be awarded: "Nothing happens. Nobody comes, nobody goes. It’s awful...." There is much more, and you can see it all here: http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/my-grading-scale-for-the-fall-semester-composed-entirely-of-samuel-beckett-quotes Happy holidays to you and yours! Personally, after absorbing a fulfilling solstice tomorrow (it gets quite dark up here this time of year and we are pleased to see it begin to turn), I'll be celebrating Festivus on the 23rd. We were unable to find the traditional aluminum pole at neighborhood stores, but I'm particularly looking forward to the Airing of the Grievances this year. :-) Chris --- Christopher D.
