The Medscape Neurology eNewsletter contains an article on
five relatively rare headache conditions but the one that caught
my eye was "Exploding Head Syndrome". No, this is not from
the movie "Scanners" but a sleep related headache where one
experiences loud sounds (like a bang) and bright lights, which awaken
the person. More details are available from the Wikipedia
entry on EHS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome
The American Sleep Association:
http://www.sleepassociation.org/index.php?p=explodingheadsyndrome
A research article using EEG readings that suggest that EHS is
not an epilepsy related condition:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1896728
And here is a link to the article in the journal "Headache" that
served as the basis for the Medscape article:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23293865

Oddly enough, there is usually little pain reported with
EHS. However, it can disrupt sleep and produce sleep
deprivation if it does not resolve quickly. It is unknown
why they occur.
