The students (and other young people) I know don't type messages with shorthand like that (on FB or while texting) for the simple reason that it is way more work (practically and cognitively) to find a #, $, or even 1 than it is to find the correct letter. That is particularly true when you type on a smart phone where you might have to change the keyboard to find the special characters. Auto-correct functions on many smart phones also automatically change incorrect spelling. A funny website http://www.damnyouautocorrect.com/43651/the-best-of-november-2012/also shows that at least these people at this time seem to type with relatively little shorthand. Marie

"In Detroit, doctors encountered a 40-year-old patient who had no trouble reading, writing or understanding language. His only consistent problem was that he had lost the ability to type coherent text messages on his phone. An imaging scan showed that he had suffered a mild ischemic stroke, caused by a clot or blockage in his brain". http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/19/garbled-texting-as-a-sign-of-stroke/ The article provides some examples of texts from patients suffering from distextia. After reading those messages and a reader's comment, I was immediately reminded of the linguistic quality of modern texting between members of our younger generation. For example, consider this FB exchange between my 18 year-old daughter and one of her friends: "ok@y i'll a$k b1lly what time w3 hav3 t0 be at sch00l 4 da sh0w fr1day!" reply: c000l t3ll h1m I say hi!". WTH!!! :-) Miguel --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
