NOTE #1: Scott top-posted the following to material in the "Mindset"
thread which may lead some to think that this is a response to
Claudia Stanny's response. I've deleted her response and other material
since they are not relevant.

Note #2: Access to the article that Scott links to above requires one to
have a subscription to the chronicle (or, perhaps, use an internet connection
on a campus that has a subscription which should seamlessly connect).
However, if one is using a WiFi connection off-campus (I presume this
applies to other types of connections as well), one will be blocked from
the article and one will then have to access it through their school's library
or whatever method they used (I had to go through NYU's library to
access it).

I think the key lesson that the article provides is the following:

"When one finds oneself in a hole, the first rule of holes is to stop digging."

If Geoffrey Miller had just apologized and said that he did a stupid,
thoughtless thing, NYU would have let him off the hook. But in an attempt
to provide some justification for his stupidity, Miller said that the tweet
was part of a research project. Fans of IRBs will recognize that most
research needs to be approved by the institution where the research is
being done. Quoting from the Chronicle article:

|Mr. Miller's assertion of a continuing research project could
|be problematic for him because scientists are generally required
|to obtain prior approval for any research involving human subjects.
|
|Mr. Miller did not seek approval for such research from the
| institutional review boards at either NYU or New Mexico,
|spokesmen at the two universities said. According to Mr. Lentz
| [NOTE: Lentz is a NYU spokesperson], Mr. Miller said such
|IRB approval was not necessary under his own understanding of
|federal law.

Needless to say, Miller's home institution UNM is also looking into whether
Miller had submitted such "research" to its IRB.

The article ends with the statement that Miller is only at NYU until
August after which he returns to UNM. NYU's loss appears to be
UNM's loss. ;-)
