What kind of source is the Daily Mail? Is it Onion-like?

Simple answer, no. The story was picked up and repeated in a number of
outlets, including the Telegraph:

And for reasons that I don't know, BBC covered it in various foreign language
versions of its websites; see:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mundo/video_fotos/2011/07/110713_galeria_belugas_natalia_avseenko_rg.shtml
http://www.bbc.co.uk/portuguese/noticias/2011/07/110718_russa_nua_baleias_bg.shtml
And the Huffington Post carried it though their license for the pictures
appears to have expired:

Note that the Mail story is dated June 2011 and the rest are from around that time. Although presented as something like a research study (do beluga whales prefer human skin to covered skin) there doesn't appear to have been any publication or follow-up on this. The pretty pictures are the work of the Russian photographer
Viktor Lyagushkin and this webpage contains a video of photos taken:

The woman in the video, Natalia Avseenko, was also in another underwater
photoshoot called"The Lady of Orda Cave"; some of the images can be seen
here:

All of this is part of a group called Phototeam.Pro and more info and video

Braving sub-zero temperatures, she has thrown caution - and her clothes -
to the wind to tame two beluga whales in a unique and controversial
experiment.

Natalia Avseenko, 36, was persuaded to strip naked as marine experts
believe belugas do not like to be touched by artificial materials such as
diving suits.

The skilled Russian diver took the plunge as the water temperature hit
minus 1.5 degrees Centigrade.
