Okay, ever wonder which of the states in U.S. had people that were the most arrogant, rudest, dumbest, drunkest, least attractive, and such characteristics? Yeah, me neither. But there are people out there who are interested in such things and have done survey research on this issue. One popular media article on the results of this survey is from the NY Daily News; see: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/americans-new-yorkers-rudest-survey-article-1.1431934 The source is the publication Business Insider which has many more results in map format; see: http://www.businessinsider.com/poll-how-americans-feel-about-the-states-2013-8
NOTE: New York pops up first in some categories but the strangest is that it is first or close in the following two categories: Has the best sports fans and has the worst sports fans. As someone commented somewhere, clearly the respondents are unfamiliar with the sports fans of Philadelphia who are famous for booing Santa Claus at a hockey game (or was it a basketball game?). There is another series of maps on the Business Insider website that may also be of interest to folks: how does pronunciation vary as function of geographical location. They have an article with 22 maps that show differences in pronunciation that is based on the work of Joshua Katz, a Ph.D. student in statistics at North Carolina State University; here is the article: http://www.businessinsider.com/22-maps-that-show-the-deepest-linguistic-conflicts-in-america-2013-6 There is a link to Katz's website where there is 122 maps but I keep getting a "server overloaded" message when I try to get there (the URL is at the end of the Business Insider article). -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
