Glad to read this. And I think if he did a good job with the New York
accent in
The World of Henry Orient.
Okay, I don't want to leave the impression that I am some how against
Peter Sellers, indeed, I think that he is a splendid actor who also
showed
his vocal prowess in Kubrick's "Lolita" as Clare Quilty and held his own
against Alec Guiness in the original "The Ladykillers", but I think what
is
being missed here is that Sellers was playing Americans while I believe
that Alec Guinness has never played an American so there is no way to
compare the two in terms of how well they mimic American accents.
Guiness has played an Arab in "Lawrence of Arabia" and a Russian
in "Doctor Zhivago" but these were all English speaking roles comparable
to Seller's performance in the Pink Panther movies.
The more appropriate comparison is whether Alec Guinness' variations
in BRITISH accents is as good as Peter Seller's variations in U.S.
accents.
Stuart McKelvie below says that at least he can tell it is always him
but I wonder what he bases this on? Guinness' accent in the role of
Fagin in "Oliver Twist" (who is hard to recognize behind his hugely
anti-semitic nose) is quite different from that of, say, Gulley Jimson
in "The Horse's Mouth" and different from that of Prof. Marcus in
"The Ladykillers" and the rest of his films. I think that someone like
Allen Esterton, a British person who may be able to readily detect
variation in British English accents, may be needed to make the call.

Dear Tipsters,
Mike Palij referred to Alec Guinness as a great character actor and
also to
accents (e.g. Sean Connery).
I agree about Alec Guinness's acting skills, but one thing about him
also
disappoints me: his voice. We can also tell that it is him! Either he
cannot
disguise it or chooses not to.
Or is there an example where he does in fact conceal it? Sellers is
marvellous at getting accents right.
One of my favourite examples is when he plays the American President
Merkin
Muffley in Dr. Strangelove. Perhaps your folks south of the border can
tell
me if you think he does a good job.
