Chris-

I concur. But another important point that we don't want to lose sight of is
the obscene disparity between what the faculty member was making and what the
college president was making. Forgetting for a moment what "benefits" would be
costed at, she was making no more than $25,000 a year while the president was
making $700,000! That's a ratio of about 28 to one. In my college (with a
strong union) I was making about $85,000 when I retired and the president was
making about $250,000 or about 3 to one. I don't begrudge administrators a
higher salary (frankly, I wouldn't want their job)but when the boss/worker
salary ratio gets into double digits you have a serious injustice.

We can quibble about the details of this particular case, or criticize the tone
of this or that report all we want. What is indisputable is the increasing
exploitation of short-term contract teaching labor in the North American
academy. That is the issue. Do not get distracted from it by those whose aim
is, frankly, to distract you from it. The current situation is an abomination
and it should be corrected. Unfortunately, the people who run colleges and
universities these days are too often people who do not have anything remotely
resembling the qualifications of those they employ. They have little idea what
the institution is really for, and they have less idea of how to facilitate
those within it to do their highest quality (rather than highest quantity)
work. Those are the people you should be angry at, not the woman who died, her
grieving relative, or the union organizer who tried to improve things.
