Tests! Grades! GPAs! Evaluations! Assessment! We are so concerned
with what a student should know or supposedly knows at that moment. Maybe we
should be more concerned with what a student will be able to do in the moments
to come with what she/he knows. We say we teach them "lifelong learning."
But, is that more of a longing than a reality? Do we focus on "present
doers" rather on "future thinkers?" Do we graduate "wishers" or innovators?
Do we emphasize the outer hare rather than the inner tortoise? Do we develop
cravers of the new or comfortable and safe settlers for the accepted? Do we
help develop an emotional agility, a resilency? Do we help them acquire a
willingness to fail, a willingness to stand up and stand out, a willingness to
be misunderstood, and a resiliency to get up and go on? Do we set them up to
become burnt out or to become an eternal flame? Do we help them learn how to
fall forward rather than defensively fall backward? Do we help them learn not
to bite and get hooked on a negative line of inner chatter of fear, stress,
distress, that crowds their feelings and thoughts, and crowds out their drive?
Do we teach them how to spit out the hook so they can live the life they
truly want to live? What's that saying, "If you want to build a ship, don't
drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather
teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."

Knowledge, information, training, skill, and even espoused values do not make
people thrive. It's just the reverse.

Make it a good day
